Update 3-28-19: Google has removed the app from their online Google Play Store as of 8:30 pm Thursday.
The Human Rights Campaign suspended Google from the 2019 Corporate Equality Index after the tech conglomerate did not remove a conversion therapy app despite requests from LGBTQ advocacy organizations, medical professionals, and lawmakers. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft were quick to remove the app from their online stores when they were approached.
Sometimes known as 'reparative therapy,' so-called conversion therapy methods include a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades. Minors are especially vulnerable, and conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.
