CenterLink is one of 400+ members of the Family Equality Council's Every Child Deserves a Family Campaign battling against discrimination in foster care and adoption.
From a frightening waiver issued to South Carolina last month to President Trump praising adoption agencies for refusing service to same-sex couples during the recent National Prayer Breakfast, these campaigns demonize same-sex parents, provide special privileges to Christian agencies, and normalize subsidizing discrimination with taxpayer money. They allow taxpayer-funded faith-based foster care and adoption agencies to turn qualified foster parents away if they don't agree with the agency's specific religious beliefs.
One in five foster youth identify as LGBTQ. Researchers estimate the total number of children nationwide living with at least one gay parent ranges from 6 to 14 million, and an estimated two million LGBTQ people are interested in adopting.
Three LGBTQ members of Congress – Rep. Katie Hill (CA-25), Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) and Rep. Angie Craig (MN-2) – are asking their colleagues to sign a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) demanding that they “stop this despicable taxpayer-funded discrimination and uphold the essential nondiscrimination protections that ensure that every child has a loving home.”
Urge your Representative to sign the letter telling the administration to stop sanctioning discrimination in adoptions and foster care. We've written the letter, so all you have to do is sign and hit send.
