This is your opportunity to tell the administration why you oppose health care discrimination.

The proposed regulations on Section 1557 of the Health Care Rights Law have been officially issued and a public comment period has begun. We need as many people as possible to oppose these despicable proposals.
I'll give you a quick run down of Section 1557: It's the part of the Affordable Care Act that bans gender discrimination. But the new proposals would erase all reference to protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, sex stereotyping, and gender identity. That means the LGBTQ community is at risk of being discriminated against in all kinds of settings - everything from receiving a flu shot to visiting an emergency room after a car accident.
The Health Care Rights Law already bans discrimination in all kinds of health care settings. These new regulation cannot change the law but they will confuse providers and insurers, making it more difficult for our community to access life-saving care.
We both know that LGBTQ people already experience inequity when it comes to health care. We tend to avoid going to the doctor out of fear of discrimination or due to denial of coverage; which is exactly what happened to Leslie and Katie when their applications for health insurance were met by letter after letter of rejection. Their story is not unusual, and if you have a similar one I want to hear it.
Now it's time for you to speak up. Tell the administration that our community will not stand for this type of blatant discrimination.
Sincerely,
Tanya Tassi
