Freedom of religion is important, which is why it is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. However, religious freedom doesn’t give anyone the right to discriminate or to hurt others. Under a newly proposed rule by the United States Department of Labor, a government contractor could refuse to hire someone, OR legally fire someone just because they are LGBTQ, a religious minority, or a single mom. One-fifth of the American workforce would be affected by this, and your tax dollars would be used to fund it.
This is a major betrayal of workers and the right to be free from discrimination on the job. The office that proposed this rule—called the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs—specifically exists to “protect workers, promote diversity and enforce the law.” Its proposed rule would open the door to taxpayer-funded discrimination against the very people it’s supposed to protect.
